Quaint cluster of samurai residences that have remained unchanged for more than 400 years.
One of the largest cluster of samurai residences in Japan, imbued with samurai culture.
During the Edo period, Satsuma Domain had established local control centers called tojō throughout its governing territory. Within these tojō were clusters of warrior residences called fumoto, where samurai lived. Located on the border with the Higo Domain (presently Kumamoto Prefecture), Izumi fumoto was one of the largest and most important defense bases. It has been selected as an important National Traditional Architecture Preservation District and was recognized as a Japan Heritage Site in 2019.
