The spacious grounds of Nishi Hongwanji are open to all for free worship. Please relax and enjoy your time in the temple halls—listen to sutra chanting or Dharma talks, admire the cultural treasures, or simply rest quietly.
The Amidado (The Hall of Amida Budha) and Goeido (Founder's Hall) feature various patterns of “Umeki.” Umeki is a traditional technique for repairing wood by filling knots and cracks with pieces of wood. Unique designs such as elephants, fish, and Mount Fuji are found here, said to have originated from the playful spirit of the carpenters who repaired the halls during the Edo period.
Free daily temple grounds tours led by monks of Nishi Hongwanji! A total of 30 monks will guide you through the grounds in an enjoyable way.
