A Historical Stroll at Doshisha University, Where Tradition Lives On

Doshisha University traces its roots to Doshisha English School, established in the early Meiji period. The Imadegawa Campus features numerous historic buildings, including structures designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Why not take a tour of this historic campus?

Completed in 1884 (Meiji 17), the tower serves as both a bell tower and clock tower.
Originally, the clock was a pendulum-driven mechanical clock manufactured by the American Seth Thomas Clock Co.

  Chapel【Important Cultural Property】

  Completed in 1886 (Meiji 19) to a design by D.C. Green, this Gothic-style chapel is the oldest extant Protestant brick chapel in Japan and is designated an Important Cultural Property.

  Main gate

  The main gate renovation was completed at the end of May. While maintaining harmony with the cultural heritage buildings, it incorporates modern functionality, featuring installations such as digital signage and benches. The area surrounding the Conscience Monument, inscribed with the handwriting of Doshisha's founder, Jo Niijima, has also been refined, creating a more open and expansive impression.

  Yushukan【Important Cultural Property】

  Originally built in 1887 and called the “Syojyakukan,” it served as Doshisha's first library. It concluded its role upon the completion of the second library, Keimeikan, and was renamed “Yushukan” by the eighth president of Doshisha, Danjo Ebina.

  Clarke Memorial Hall【Important Cultural Property】

  The hall's name originates from the late son of the donors, Mr. and Mrs. B.W. Clark. It has been in use since 1893, opening the following year. Even after the new Theology Hall was constructed in 1963, it continues to serve as a venue for Christian education.

  Christmas Illumination

  The Christmas illuminations began in 2000, marking the 125th anniversary of the university's founding. A Himalayan cedar tree is adorned with approximately 16,000 lights, creating a romantic scene.
