Twenty-four facilities related to the Biwa Lake Canal, which was constructed during the Meiji period to supply water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto City, have been designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. Among them, the First Tunnel, Second Tunnel, Third Tunnel, Nanzenji Aqueduct, and Incline have been designated as national treasures. This is the first time that modern civil engineering structures have been designated as national treasures.
