Former Main Building of the Kyoto Prefectural Office

Japan's oldest public offi ce building.

This two-story Western-style building, completed in 1904, has a corridor around a courtyard. The interior features Japanese-style furnishings such as the coffered ceiling, which is also used in temple architecture. Currently, the former governor's office and the former council chambers are open to the public on limited days of the week.

  The structure is of stone and brick masonry and was registered as a National Important Cultural Property in 2004.

  The former assembly hall was restored on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of its completion. Currently, lectures and other events are held here.
