The renowned castle filled with tumultuous history and glory
Kumamoto Castle is renowned as one of the top three castles in Japan. Constructed around 400 years ago, by Kato Kiyomasa, a military commander from the Sengoku Period (warring states period), this castle has experienced a drastic and dramatic history ── Miyamoto Musashi, the famous master swordsman of the Edo Period once dwelled there, and It has been through many dramatic events in history, such as being the fiercest battlefield of the Seinan War in the Meiji Era. Serious damage was inflicted in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, and restoration work is being carried on daily. See and enjoy up close the magnificent view of the castle, which is both a place of relaxation for the citizens as well as a symbol of recovery.
Opening hours:9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Last admission at 4:00 PM)
*On weekdays despite the restoration work being conducted, viewing from the special viewing path is possible.
*On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, it is possible to tour both the special viewing path and the traditional (special public opening phase 1) viewing route consecutively.
