Know, look, go, experience! Fascinating Sakurajima

桜島特集 vol.9

View of Sakurajima from Shiroyama (Kagoshima City)

Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima, towers almost in the center of Kinko Bay (Kagoshima Bay) and can be seen from every part of the prefecture. Sakurajima is accessible from downtown Kagoshima in about 15 minutes by the “Sakurajima Ferry”. Don’t only enjoy the view, but also experience the smooth boat ride and the majestic Sakurajima for yourself!

First, know!
What is Sakurajima like?

Sakurajima is an active volcano complex consisting of Kitadake and Minamidake, which reach a height of 1,117 meters (Mt. Kitadake). It used to literally be an island, but the lava that flowed during the great eruption of 1914 (3rd year of Taisho era) filled the straits and connected Sakurajima to the Osumi Peninsula. Although Sakurajima still erupts repeatedly on a small scale on a daily basis, approximately 4,000 people live on the island, and the city of Kagoshima, with a population of approximately 600,000, is located just 4 km away across the sea.

The Kurokami Buried shrine Gate tells of the threat of the Taisho Eruption to today. The gate, which was 3 meters high, was buried by volcanic ash and pumice stone, leaving only the upper part.

Look and enjoy!

Sakurajima looks different depending on where you view it from! It looks different depending on where and when you view it.
