  What is the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake?

  On January 17, 1995, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the northern part of Awaji Island in southern Hyogo Prefecture. The quake, with an intensity of up to 7 on the Japanese scale, struck urban areas.
