Takashimaya was founded in Kyoto in 1831 as a used cotton merchant. Later, during the Meiji period, the company entered the trading business. In 1932, the Osaka branch opened in the Nankai Building.
The Takashimaya Annex, built in the early Showa period, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Today, it is a complex of historical
archives, a hotel, a food hall, and other facilities.
