The coral dyeing experience uses precious coral fossils owned by Shuri Ryusen. Choose your favorite pattern and shape.

Create your own unique "coral dye" as a memento of your trip.

Established in 1973 right next to the World Heritage site Shuri Castle, this shop aims to revive Okinawa's traditional Bingata dyeing technique and to develop and pass on dyeing methods. Here, you can experience "coral dyeing," the only such technique in Japan, devised by the founder and dyeing artist, Koto Yamaoka. Coral dyeing is a technique in which a cloth is placed over a coral fossil and rubbed with a dyeing tool soaked in dye, transferring the pattern like a rubbing. By layering or creating gradients with the four colors of dye—red, blue, yellow, and purple—you can create delicate expressions as you wish. Take home a one-of-a-kind item that you dyed yourself as a memento of your trip.
