Uji Shrine

An ancient shrine guarded by rabbits along the Uji River

Founded in 313, the shrine enshrines Uji no Wakiiratsuko no Mikoto. Built on the site of Emperor Ojin's detached palace, it was also known as Uji Rikyu Shahata. The main hall is said to have been built in the early Kamakura period. According to legend, a rabbit guided the deity on his way to Uji, hence the "looking back rabbit" figurine in the main hall. A wooden seated statue of Uji no Wakiiratsuko no Mikoto is enshrined in the main hall.
