Ujigami Shrine

The ancient architectural style of Japan's oldest main hall

It enshrines three deities: Emperor Ōjin, Prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko, and Emperor Nintoku. The main hall, consisting of three halls built in the Ikkensha Nagare-zukuri style, is a Heian period building and the oldest existing shrine architecture in Japan. Both the main hall and the worship hall, a Shinden-zukuri style residential building, are designated as National Treasures. A distinctive feature is that the left and right halls are large, while the central hall is small. It is said that it was once a guardian shrine of Byōdō-in Temple, along with Uji Shrine.
