Higashi Honganji Temple

The world's largest wooden building, the head temple of the Otani sect of Shinshu Buddhism

The temple was founded in 1602 by the priest Kyonyo, who received a donation of temple land from Tokugawa Ieyasu. The current building was rebuilt in 1895. The Goeido Hall, which houses the portrait of the founder of the sect, Saint Shinran, is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world.
The photo shows the Amida Hall, located to the south of the Miedo Hall. The principal image of the temple, the Amida Nyorai, is enshrined here. It was rebuilt in 1895, the same year as the Miedo Hall.

  The Goei-do Hall, which stands almost in the center of the temple grounds, is 76 meters wide and 38 meters high! The inner and outer sanctuaries are covered with a total of 927 tatami mats.
