Gion
The oldest theater in Japan, carrying on the traditions of the town of theater
This theater in Gion-Shijo is said to have originated as one of the seven playhouses officially recognized by the Edo Shogunate. It reopened in 2018 after undergoing earthquake-resistance reinforcement work. It is famous for the "Kichirei Kaomise Performance" held every year at the end of the year.
The coffered ceiling, a historical Japanese architectural style, harmonizes with the Art Deco style.
