Nison-in Temple

A vibrant tunnel stretches out over "Autumn Leaves Baba"

This Tendai sect temple was founded during the Jōwa era (834-848) by imperial decree of Emperor Saga. It is known as "Nison-in" because it enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha and Amida Buddha as its principal deities. The imposing main gate, which was relocated and donated from Fushimi Castle, is also impressive.
This tranquil temple, nestled at the eastern foot of Mount Ogura (a mountain even mentioned in the Hyakunin Isshu anthology of poems), offers a peaceful and serene experience.

  The approach to the shrine, covered in a red tunnel of maple leaves that jut out from both sides, is called "Momiji no Baba" (Maple Horse Riding Ground).
