Former Saga Imperial Palace Daikakuji Temple

One of Japan's three great moon-viewing locations, still reminiscent of the Heian period

This temple is the head temple of the Daikakuji school of Shingon Buddhism and is a monzeki temple with ties to the Imperial family, having converted Emperor Saga's villa into a temple in 876. Osawa Pond in the east of the temple grounds is Japan's oldest forest and spring garden, modeled after Lake Dongting in China.
At Osawa Pond, pictured here, a "Moon Viewing Evening" event is held during the harvest moon period, following in the footsteps of the past.
