Nonomiya Shrine

An ancient sacred shrine in Sagano with ties to The Tale of Genji

This shrine is known for being the place where the Saio, who served Ise Grand Shrine on behalf of the Emperor, once purified herself, and it also appears in the Kasagi chapter of the Tale of Genji. The black torii gate that welcomes worshippers is made of sawtooth oak with the bark still intact, and is the oldest style of torii gate in Japan. As the enshrined deity, Nonomiya Daikokuten (Amaterasu Omikami), is worshipped as the god of good relationships, it is popular as one of Kyoto's leading matchmaking spots, and there is no end to the number of people who visit in search of blessings. You should also try stroking the "Turtle Stone," which is said to grant wishes when you stroke it.

The photo shows the main hall. The beautiful moss garden, known as the carpet moss garden, which spreads across the entire north side of the tranquil main hall surrounded by bamboo forest, is also a must-see. In autumn, the contrast between the green of the moss and the autumn leaves is beautiful.

Kameishi (Tortoise Stone)
The sacred stone next to Nonomiya Daikokuten is also called the Turtle Stone because it is shaped like a turtle. It is said that if you make a wish and gently stroke it, your wish will come true within a year.
Kuroki Torii (Black wood torii gate)
It is surrounded by black wooden torii gates and small fences, which are also erected for the Emperor's enthronement ceremony, the Daijosai. The historic cypress bark torii gates are said to ward off evil spirits.
Love plaque 1,200 yen
Ema are votive plaques for praying for success in love and other good relationships. They are handcrafted one by one in the shape of a hollyhock leaf. They are popular for their cuteness, as the hollyhock leaf resembles a heart shape.
Elegant charm 1,600 yen
The good luck charms inspired by "The Tale of Genji" are popular souvenirs due to their vivid colors that evoke the romance of the Heian period. The back of the charms features a male aristocrat.

May 18th and 25th: "Saga Festival: Shinko Festival and Kanko Festival"
This festival is held at both Nonomiya and Atago shrines. It is said that Matsuo Basho once attended the festival.

June 30th: "Summer Purification"
People pray to cleanse themselves of the sins and impurities of the past six months and to spend the summer in good health.
