Ninna-ji Temple

The five-story pagoda, a distinctive feature of the Edo period, and the cherry blossoms make a magnificent combination

Founded in 888, this is the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism. Most of the temple was burned down during the Onin War, but was rebuilt by the Edo Shogunate in 1646. The temple grounds are lined with historical buildings erected during the Edo period, such as the five-story pagoda and Niomon Gate. The Omuro cherry blossoms in spring are also a must-see. During the spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage season, you can enjoy the combination of the approximately 36m-tall five-story pagoda.

  You will be greeted by Niomon Gate, one of Kyoto's three major gates and designated as an Important Cultural Property.

  On either side of the Niomon Gate stand two statues of Kongorikishi, known as Nio statues.

• CHECKPOINT

  The Omuro Flower Festival is held from March 27th to May 6th, when the Omuro cherry blossoms, known for their short height and late blooming, and the new green leaves are at their best.
