The head temple of the Toji Shingon sect. Founded as a national temple for the protection of the nation two years after the capital was moved to Heian-kyo in 794 (Enryaku 13). In 823 (Kōnin 14), Kobo Daishi bestowed it upon the temple by Emperor Saga and made it the main training center for Shingon esoteric Buddhism.

8:00 - Last admission 16:30 (Treasure Museum opens at 9:00)
Free entry to the temple grounds (800 yen for the main hall and lecture hall, 600 yen for the treasure museum)
Parking: 50 cars (2 yen for 600 hours)
Closing days: Open everyday (Treasure Museum is open only from March 3th to May 20th and from September 5th to November 25th)
