This is the head temple of the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. It is home to the oldest Sanmon gate in the Muromachi period, a representative example of Zen Buddhist architecture, as well as valuable architecture that gives insight into the lives of Zen monks in the Muromachi period, such as the bathhouse and toilet.
