Tofukuji Temple
A Zen temple boasting magnificent nature surrounded by a sea of green maples
This is the head temple of the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. It is home to the oldest Sanmon gate in the Muromachi period, a representative example of Zen Buddhist architecture, as well as valuable architecture that gives insight into the lives of Zen monks in the Muromachi period, such as the bathhouse and toilet. The natural beauty of the temple grounds, including the Tsutenkyo Bridge and the Hojo Garden designed by Mirei Shigemori, is also impressive.
