Eikando (Zenrinji Temple)

Eikan-do is the head temple of the Jodo-shu Seizan Zenrin-ji sect, founded in 853. It is famous for its autumn foliage, so much so that it is called "Eikan-do of the Maple Trees," and in early summer, the green maple leaves are refreshing. The principal image of Eikan-do, the Amida Buddha statue, has its face turned diagonally backward and is called "Mikaeri Amida" (Looking Back Amida). Standing at the highest point on the grounds of Eikan-do is the Tahoto pagoda. It is reached by climbing about 140 steps that start near the Mikage-do hall, and from the base of the pagoda you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kyoto city. The fantastical illuminations are also a must-see.

  The autumn foliage light-up event will be held from November 20th (Fri) to December 6th (Sun). The best time to see the leaves is relatively long, lasting about a month.
