Myoshinji Temple

Japan's largest Zen temple with a row of unique sub-temples

Founded in 1337, it is the head temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. It is approximately 500m east to west, 600m north to south, and its grounds are vast, covering an area of ​​approximately 330,000 sq.m. The painting of a cloud dragon on the ceiling of the lecture hall is a masterpiece that took Kano Tan'yu eight years to paint. It is known as the "dragon that looks in all directions" because its eyes meet from all angles.

  The cloud dragon painting on the ceiling of the main hall is 12 meters in diameter. It has never been restored, yet it has shown surprisingly little discoloration.
