Otsu
A temple with a long history where Japanese Buddhism developed
This temple is located in the mountains that straddle Kyoto and Shiga, and was founded at the end of the Nara period when 19-year-old Saicho climbed Mount Hiei and built a hermitage there. After founding the Tendai sect, it rose to the highest position in the Japanese religious world along with Kongobuji Temple on Mount Koya.
The photo shows the Amida Hall, which was built in 1937 to commemorate the 1150th anniversary of the founding of Mount Hiei.
Shakado Hall is said to have been moved from Mii-dera Temple by Toyotomi Hideyoshi after Nobunaga burned it down.
