Hikone Castle_vol.22_Shiga Special

A symbol of the Edo period political system with over 400 years of history

Construction began on the castle grounds under the orders of the Tokugawa shogunate when Naotsugu Ii, the eldest son of Naomasa Ii, the first lord of Hikone Domain, began. The castle tower was relocated from Otsu Castle and the balance tower from Nagahama Castle, and the castle was built over a period of approximately 20 years using old materials from abandoned castles.
The photo shows the National Treasure Hikone Castle tower. The roof is gorgeous with three designs incorporated into it.
