A historical stroll through Doshisha University, where tradition lives on

Doshisha University has its roots in the Doshisha English School, which was founded in the early Meiji period. The Imadegawa Campus is home to many historical buildings, including some designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Why not take a tour of this historic campus?

The photo shows the Shōeikan (an Important Cultural Property). Designed by DC Green with a donation from the American Board, the building was completed in 1884 (Meiji 17). The tower serves as both a bell tower and a clock tower. Originally, the clock was a pendulum-type mechanical clock, manufactured by the American company Seth Thomas Clock Co.

  Chapel (Important Cultural Property)

  This Gothic chapel was designed by DC Green and completed in 19. It is the oldest surviving Protestant brick chapel in Japan and is designated as an Important Cultural Property.

  Harris Science Museum [Important Cultural Property]

  The former Harris School of Science and Technology building, constructed with a donation from J.N. Harris, now serves as a gallery showcasing materials related to the founder, Joseph Hardy Neesima, and Doshisha University, as well as the history of Kyoto through archaeological and historical documents unearthed on campus, and presenting "Doshisha Today." Several special exhibitions are also held throughout the year.

  Clark Memorial Hall [Important Cultural Property]

  The name of the building originates from the name of the deceased son of the donors, B.W. Clark and his wife. It has been in use since 1893 and opened as a theological seminary the following year. Even after a new theological seminary was built in 1963, it continues to be used as a place for Christian education.

  Christmas illuminations

  The Christmas illuminations, which began in 2000 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the hotel's founding, will illuminate the Himalayan cedars in Sanctus Court with approximately 16,000 lights, creating a romantic spectacle. The lighting ceremony will be held on November 20, 2026, at 5:15 PM.
