Shimogamo Shrine (Kamo Mioya Shrine)

An ancient shrine that combines the prehistoric forest air and the elegance of the capital

One of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. The official year of construction is unknown, but one theory is that it originated when Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto was enshrined in Tadasu no Mori during the reign of the first Emperor Jimmu.
The photo shows many important cultural properties, including the vermilion tower gate with corridors stretching from east to west, and the dance hall where dances are dedicated during the Aoi Festival.

  Tadasu no Mori Forest, which boasts an area of ​​approximately 12,000 square meters, is located within the grounds of Shimogamo Shrine. The colorful, arch-shaped green maples are beautiful.

  For 10 days before and after Doyo no Ushi, the Mitarashi Festival (a Shinto ritual in which people stand with their feet in the air) is held to pray for good health and safety, and is crowded with many people every year.
