Heian Shrine

The elegant vermilion-colored imperial architecture conveys the life at court

Founded in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian, the shrine is dedicated to the 50th Emperor Kanmu. The main shrine building is a reproduction of the Chodoin, the main hall of Heian-kyo, at approximately 5/8 scale. Flowers bloom in all seasons in the vast shrine garden.
The approximately 3 square meter strolling garden with a pond was designed by Ogawa Jihei, a landscape gardener active from the Meiji period to the early Showa period.

  Enter the temple grounds through the large vermilion gate, Otenmon, and you'll find yourself in a world of elegance.

  The area around Heian Shrine, where you can enjoy the changing nature of the seasons, is also famous as a walking course.

• CHECKPOINT

  In early April, the Sakurane Night is held, where you can enjoy the illumination of the weeping cherry trees in the South and East Shrine Gardens, accompanied by elegant music.
