Heian Shrine

The elegant vermilion-colored imperial architecture conveys the life at court

Founded in 1895 (Meiji 28) to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo, the shrine enshrines Emperor Kanmu, the 50th emperor. The shrine buildings are a replica of the Chodoin, the main hall of Heian-kyo, at approximately 5/8 scale. The shrine garden, a strolling garden with a pond covering approximately 30,000 square meters, is filled with flowers that bloom in every season. The photo shows the large vermilion gate, the Otenmon Gate. Passing through the gate and entering the shrine grounds, an elegant world unfolds.

  The Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages), the grand festival of Heian Jingu Shrine, is held every year on October 22nd. The highlight is the historical procession involving approximately 2000 people.
