Gion
An ancient shrine that watches over the entertainment district affectionately known as "Gion-san"
This ancient shrine is said to have been founded in the second year of the reign of Empress Saimei (656) and is the head shrine of all Gion shrines across the country. It is known for its blessings of warding off evil, bringing good fortune and prosperity in business, and is one of the most popular shrines in Kyoto for its New Year's visits every year. The Gion Festival, one of Japan's three major festivals, is a ceremonial event held at Yasaka Shrine.
