Yasaka Shrine

An ancient shrine that watches over the entertainment district affectionately known as "Gion-san"

This ancient shrine is said to have been founded in 656 during the reign of Empress Saimei and is the head shrine of all Gion shrines throughout Japan. Known for its blessings of warding off evil, bringing good fortune, and business prosperity, it is one of Kyoto's busiest places to visit for New Year's prayers every year. The Gion Festival, the annual festival of Yasaka Shrine, is famous as one of Japan's three great festivals.
The West Gate, located at the eastern end of Shijo Street, is a symbolic landmark of Gion.
