Amami Village vol.14

"Keihan" (from 1,690 yen) is rice topped with chicken breast, shredded egg, pickled papaya, and other ingredients, and served with chicken broth.

Memories of a trip to Kagoshima made with Amami food

Located about 380 km south of the prefecture's mainland, Amami no Sato allows you to experience the nature and traditions of the Amami Islands without leaving Kagoshima city. At the restaurant "Hananka" on the premises, you can enjoy Amami's local dish, Keihan rice. During the Edo period, Keihan rice was used to entertain officials from Satsuma, so you can experience the spirit of hospitality that is also known as "Lord's cuisine."

The most popular dish is the "Black Pork Loin Cutlet Set" (1,2,190 yen). You can enjoy the two delicious flavors of black pork and Keihan rice.

A medicinal soup made with colorful seasonal Kagoshima vegetables and rich sesame soy milk
Vegan menu also available: "Kagoshima's seasonal colorful vegetables and rich sesame soy milk medicinal soup set" (3,000 yen) (reservations required 3 days in advance)

The interior of the store is decorated with designs from Amami, including Oshima Tsumugi and coral stones.

Two gardens where nature changes with the seasons

The 16,000 tsubo site features two gardens with different themes: the "Amami Style Garden," reminiscent of the primeval forests of Amami Oshima, and the "Roadside Island Garden," which represents the islands of Amami where various continental cultures have come and gone. In addition, the site is filled with colorful flowers, creating a space filled with a tropical atmosphere.

Experience the traditional methods and beauty of the crafts

There are also plenty of activities where you can enjoy experiencing the traditional dyeing and weaving techniques of Amami Oshima's "Oshima Tsumugi," one of the world's three major textiles. The "Plant-dyed Handkerchief Experience" (about 40-50 minutes, 2,500 yen including admission ticket) lets you make your own original yellow handkerchief using the dye from Fukuki trees that grow near the coast of the southern island, and the "Hand Weaving Experience" (about 90 minutes, 5,500 yen including admission ticket) lets you make your own original work on a hand loom that weaves Oshima Tsumugi. You can take the completed work home on the same day, making it a great souvenir from your trip.
