The whole town of Shintencho Shopping Arcade is enveloped in a fun atmosphere. Lined with specialty shops of every genre, it excites visitors. Chatting with the smiling shopkeepers will have you relaxing your cheeks. The large clock tower, which changes its appearance with each season, is the symbol of the arcade. At certain times, the sound of bells rings out and dolls dance to the music - it's so cute! Also, every July, the decorated floats of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival are displayed, heralding the start of summer.

Shintencho Shopping Arcade stretches from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station towards Tenjin Nishi-dori Street. Immediately after the end of the war, Hakata merchants stepped up to "bring back vitality and smiles" to Tenjincho (the town's name at the time), which had been burned to the ground in the Great Air Raids. In 1946 (Showa 21), 21 stores opened in wooden tiled buildings. In 1950 (Showa 25), an arcade stretching 288 meters was completed. The Shinten Festival, which began as a big sale at the time of the company's founding, has now become a beloved annual event known as the "Big Wagon Festival." The pioneering spirit of Hakata merchants has also breathed new life into the tradition of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, and the Yamakasa, which run through the streets to the shouts of "Osshoi!", has become a seasonal feature of summer in Shintencho.

Now, this shopping street, which has a history of 79 years, is moving on to the next era. A redeveloped building is scheduled to open in about five years. The human kindness and warmth so typical of Fukuoka will remain unchanged, and the area will gradually move towards a new landscape... the story of Shintencho continues.
