It was in this house that Thomas Glover, a Scottish merchant who played a major role in modernizing Japan, and his children resided for two generations. It was registered in 2015 as one of the components of the World Heritage Site "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.”In 2021, a major renovation that lasted about three years was completed.幕末から明治期にかけて長崎を訪れた外国人商人たちの面影が残る南山手の丘。ここには、旧グラバー住宅をはじめとする国指定重要文化財3棟と移築建築物6棟が集まる「グラバー園」がある。2026年には、アメリカのニューヨーク・タイムズ電子版で「2026年に行くべき52カ所」に長崎が選ばれ、観光スポットの一つとしてグラバー園も紹介された。園内を散策しながら、丘の上からの絶景も楽しみたい。Minamiyamate Hill, where traces of foreign merchants who came to Nagasaki at the end of the Edo period and during the Meiji era still remain. Here stands Glover Garden, home to three buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government, including the Former Glover Residence, as well as six relocated buildings. Named by The New York Times among “52 Places to Go in 2026,” Nagasaki also features Glover Garden as one of its attractions.
