Constructed around 400 years ago, by Kato Kiyomasa, a military commander from the Sengoku Period (warring states period), this castle has experienced a drastic and dramatic history ── Miyamoto Musashi, the famous master swordsman of the Edo Period once dwelled there, and It has been through many dramatic events in history, such as being the fiercest battlefield of the Seinan War in the Meiji Era. Serious damage was inflicted in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, and restoration work is being carried on daily.
