19北岳・南岳から成る複合活火山で、高さ1117m（北岳）に及ぶ。かつては文字通り「島」だったが、1914（大正3）年の大噴火で流れた溶岩により海峡が埋めたてられ、桜島と大隅半島が陸続きとなった。桜島は現在も日常的に小規模の噴火を繰り返しているが、島内では約3,200人の人々が暮らし、海を挟んでわずか4km先には人口約59万人の鹿児島市の街並みが広がっている。Sakurajima is an active volcano complex consisting of Kitadake and Minamidake, which reach a height of 1,117 meters (Mt. Kitadake). It used to literally be an island, but the lava that flowed during the great eruption of 1914 (3rd year of Taisho era) filled the straits and connected Sakurajima to the Osumi Peninsula. Although Sakurajima still erupts repeatedly on a small scale on a daily basis, approximately 3,200 people live on the island, and the city of Kagoshima, with a population of approximately 590,000 located just 4 km away across the sea.
